Tennis umpires consider boycott of Serena Williams after her meltdown at US Open final

The most recent news in wake of tennis star, Serena Williams’ controversial US Open final is that umpires may boycott any match played by Williams. Williams, who faced, and lost to Naomi Osaka in the US Open final, has been receiving both praise and criticism following her outburst at the match. The umpire for the match, Carlos Ramos, who is one of the most experienced referees in tennis, was the person who riled up Williams after multiple calls that were in her opinion and the opinion of others, unfair, but which Ramos and others see as justified. The lack of support from large tennis organizations is mostly what has umpires upset and causing a possible boycott.

One anonymous tennis official stated that umpires did not feel supported following the statements made by the Women’s Tennis Association and the United States Tennis Association, both of which had full support of Williams after the matter. The anonymous official also said that he felt Ramons was “thrown to the wolves for simply doing his job and was not willing to be abused for it.” This feeling of disrespect that the officials are experiencing is what inspired the boycott of Williams. However, the International Tennis Foundation did defend Ramos, but not until 48 hours after the controversy, which was not well received from the umpires.

Williams’ actions at the match have sparked reactions from people claiming she is right to stand up for herself and that what happened was sexist. Other people on the other hand, are calling the tennis star entitled and a baby. The altercation between Williams and Ramos has also resulted in a cartoon by Mark Knight of the Herald Sun, an Australian newspaper. The cartoon has been deemed racist and problematic.

Williams first received a warning for coaching and breaking her racket. She then was penalized because of verbal abuse, a penalty which came to fruition because of Williams, who first demanded an apology from Ramos, then called him a liar and a thief. Williams felt she was treated unfairly claiming that men get away with saying much worse and not getting in trouble for it and that the reason for her mistreatment was because she is a woman.
